Renowned British tenor James Bowers returns to Carrick Concerts after 6 years, accompanied again by Clive Ellison who is well known in Cornwall for his sensitive keyboard expertise.
Many will remember their last visit, when we were treated to a repertoire ranging from the bel canto opera highlight to Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn and String. This time James has chosen to sing Schubert’s world famous ‘Die Schöne Müllerin’, bringing the vibrancy and sensitivity of this powerful Viennese song cycle to the tranquility and rural sensitivity of Cornwall.
This will be James’ first public performance of ‘Die Schöne Müllerin’ which explores the narrative of love, despair and tragedy. It is a majestic setting of 20 poems by Wilhelm Müller telling the tale of a young journeyman falling for a miller’s daughter.
James is no stranger to Cornwall, having spent most of his childhood and early adult years holidaying with his relatives in Flushing; he recognises her character, her culture, her identity, and sees connections between Schubert’s character and this wonderful part of the world.
