Description

Cobalt presents two intense and original maverick performers; John Bence and David Thomas Broughton.
Both performances promise an unexpected trip into an alternative sonic world, undoubtedly uncomfortable in places and simultaneously exquisite at times.

There is a resonate beauty and a comfort in David Thomas Broughtons songs that will draw you close ready to be bathed in his melodies and carefully crafted narrative tales. But don’t get too comfortable, things are not quite as they first seem. The world of David Thomas Broughton can, and does take unexpected ‘Aliceinwonderland-esque twists as he plummets into purposely introduced elements of chaos, deliberate error and an assortment of sounds created with unlikely instruments which have in the past included radios, personal attack alarms and field recordings. The resulting outcome creates a poignant endurance test for his audience, whose patience will be rewarded with moments of delicate charm and a collage strange and beautiful songs.

His oddball quirks keep him just under the mainstream music world radar, yet amongst those who know he has become a figure of cult fascination, his confounding genius was captured on film in 2016 documentary, ‘The Ambiguity of David Thomas Broughton’ which featured contributions from folks including Shearwater, David Shrigley, Sam Amidon and concluded with Broughton himself serenading a half-eaten sausage

John Bence is a young composer and producer from Bristol, whose work tackles epic narrative themes and uncompromising sonics with a juddering emotional punch. Words fail to describe his work, it must be seen and heard to even begin to understand it.

"I can’t explain the feeling I get when I’m up on stage. It feels like an out of body experience performing this work” - John Bence

With music between acts provided by Opal Tapes April 4th at Cobalt will be an extraordinarily night.
