Description
Jason Heller joins us to discuss his book "Strange Stars" in conversation with Marc Gascoigne from Angry Robot Books
In 2013, the late David Bowie became the first musician inducted into the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame. It had been 44 years since the release of his signature song, 1969’s ‘A Space Oddity’, which crystallised the alchemy between science fiction and popular music. Today, the two remain inextricably bound.
Beginning with David Bowie’s obsession with science fiction, Strange Stars traces the dual evolution of Sci-Fi and popular music. Alongside Bowie’s extraterrestrial artistic vision, we learn about the surprising inspirations behind other intergalactic artists like Led Zeppelin, The Kinks and Parliament / Funkadelic.
Heller discusses the seismic cultural effects of Sci-Fi influences such as the Moon landing, Star Wars and the rapid development of computer technology on the era, and shows how it all came together to create sounds and styles from out of this world.
