The accidental discoveries that rock our world
The G&T In the early 1700s it was discovered that quinine could be used as a form of treatment for malaria. In the 1900s the British sailing from the Caribbean to India added navy to quinine bark soaked in sugar and water in order to make it more palatable.
Caipirinha Cachaca was discovered by slaves in Brazil when they left sugar cane juice, a by-product in the production of sugar, in the sun and it fermented into sweet alcohol. The Portuguese then barrelled it up for their journey home and added lime to prevent scurvy and sweetened with sugar to taste.
Hot Chocolate
In pre-Columbian Caribbean tribes cocoa beans were used as money. Legend has it that a wealthy man’s daughter in the Yucatec Maya married a youngster with nothing. As a sign of acceptance he boiled up his money with spices to be passed around the ceremony.
Sparkling Wine
There are lots of stories mentioning a liveliness in wine. The discovery of in bottle fermentation is when the vineyards of Champagne sold the English off wine in the 16th century. They brought it back to Kent, thought it was discussing and left it in their cellars for a year where in underwent its second fermentation.
The Negroni
It’s the Evening Standard’s drink of the decade, but was invented by accident when Count Camillo Negroni asked for his usual Americano with “a bit more kick”.
