About the party…
Be inspired by the party venue – beautiful, historic Sheffield Manor Lodge. Join in with the drama that unfolds there on the day…
Sheffield Manor Lodge: Once one of the finest Tudor dwellings in the north of England, Sheffield Manor Lodge was the home of George Talbot, 6th Earl of Shrewsbury and his wife Bess of Hardwick. Mary Queen of Scots was held as a prisoner here throughout the 1570s and 1580s.
Party hosts…
Elizabeth Talbot, Countess of Shrewsbury, known as Bess of Hardwick; Born 1527; Died 1608; By a series of well-made marriages, Bess of Hardwick rose to the highest levels of English nobility and became enormously wealthy. George Talbot, 6th Earl of Shrewsbury was her fourth husband. He was a military commander and a nobleman of high social position and wealth. Queen Elizabeth I entrusted him as keeper of her prisoner, Mary, Queen of Scots in 1569, a position he held until 1584.
Gilbert Talbot, 7th Earl of Shrewsbury; Born 1552; Died 1616; Gilbert was the eldest son of George Talbot. In 1568 (aged 16) he was married to Mary Cavendish, daughter of Bess of Hardwick.
Mary, Queen of Scots, also known as Mary Stuart; Born 1542; Died 1587; As a Catholic with a claim to the Throne of England she was held as a prisoner by the Protestant Queen Elizabeth I from 1568 until her execution in 1587. Her son James succeeded Queen Elizabeth I in 1603 to become King James I of England.
The story for the day and some characters…
It’s 1574 and the prisoner queen, Mary, has been caught up a ladder set against the perimeter wall of Sheffield Manor Lodge, with a pocketful of secret letters in her purse. Again!
Bess and Gilbert need to have words with her or they could be in trouble with Queen Elizabeth I…
- William Parry, gets caught plotting to assassinate Queen Elizabeth I
- Thomas Morgan, Mary’s Agent
- Jane Kennedy and Elizabeth Curle, servants of Mary
- Mary Cavendish, daughter of Bess of Hardwick. By all accounts, Mary inherited her mother's strong will and colourful character. She got into trouble with the courts because of her Catholic sympathies. She married Gilbert when she was 12!
