C’est au seuil des années 2000 que Ben Harper, dont on salue alors les « joyaux d’une finesse exquise » autant que l’élégance de ses interprétations, négocie un virage électrique serré avec Burn to Shine (1999), premier enregistrement avec The Innocent Criminals. On ne le retrouvera en studio avec les mêmes criminels innocents que huit ans plus tard, pour l’album Lifeline (2007). Toujours entouré de ses délinquants, un troisième opus paraît enfin en 2016, ce Call It What It Is que le gang vient exposer aujourd’hui au théâtre romain. À travers la quinzaine d’albums studio qui jalonnent sa carrière depuis 1994, Ben Harper a toujours démontré son goût pour le changement dans la continuité, passant de ses bijoux en solitaire (notamment le premier : Welcome To The Cruel World) à des rencontres de coeur. Il en est ainsi de ses collaborations avec The Innocent Criminals, avec le légendaire ensemble gospel The Blind Boys of Alabama, avec Relentless7, Fistfull of Mercy, l’harmoniciste de blues Charlie Musselwhite ou encore sa propre mère, Ellen Harper, pour un émouvant retour aux sources (Childhood Home, en 2014). Pendant tout ce temps, tournées internationales à guichets fermés, disques d’or ou de platine et récompenses prestigieuses ont fait de Ben Harper une star mondiale. Militant pour le Tibet, activiste de Vote for Change ou défenseur de la cause animale, le natif de Pomona (Californie) est également un artiste engagé.
