A rebound from unrequited love; the wonder of new parenthood; painful divorce and later joyous remarriage; lunchtime liaisons. Every life is full of moments. Every person sometimes feels closer than ever – but closer to what?
Closer Than Ever is a smart and funny musical revue with no cliched story (it has no story). Instead, each tune introduces you to new characters; each hummable number offers you laughter and tears; each song asks you to explore the moments a life may face.
Every autumn Leeds Gilbert & Sullivan Society performs a more unusual piece in smaller venues; this year is no exception. We bring the rarely performed Closer Than Ever, by Maltby & Shire. First performed in 1989, it won the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway Musical. It was also revived in New York as recently as 2012.
In a world where the same “old favourites” are available to see time and time again, this is something different. Closer Than Ever is a rare gem; an evening offering poignant charm through every door.
