Description

Time and location

The event will be held on 16th January 2025 at 19:30 in the Boyd Orr Building at the University of Glasgow. This is a hybrid event, which can be attended in person or online via Zoom.

Event details

Please join the Geological Society, in partnership with the University of Glasgow, for this instalment in the Climate Off the Rails series. This event will comprise a presentation titled Anthropogenic Geomaterials: what are they, and how do they impact climate and ecology? by Dr John MacDonald, followed by a structured discussion.

Humans deposit large quantities of waste on the Earth’s surface. This waste is often solid, made of minerals, and a by-product of industry. These ‘anthropogenic geomaterials’ pose various environmental challenges and opportunities. In this talk we will explore how such materials, such as slag from steelmaking, can help remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, as well as influence landscape and ecology.

Speaker

Dr John MacDonald is Senior Lecturer in Anthropogenic Geomaterials at the University of Glasgow.
