Description

Grab your glitter, pull on your platform shoes and join us for a special celebration of 50 years since David Bowie first introduced the world to Ziggy Stardust at the Toby Jug pub in Tolworth.

To mark the occasion, we’re declaring Thursday 10 February, 2022 as #ZiggyReturns – exactly 50 years to the day of the original gig – and inviting you to step back in time to 1972 for some Ziggy Stardust / Bowie-inspired family-friendly fun at London Waterloo Station and Tolworth Station.

The Community Brain, a Tolworth-based not-for-profit organisation, bring you a programme of activities with something for everyone to enjoy, whether you’re a lifelong Bowie fan or discovering his music for the first time.

Why celebrate Ziggy at the Toby Jug?

Ziggy Stardust was Bowie’s pioneering extra-terrestrial persona whose songs, outrageous and flamboyant costumes and sexual ambiguity, catapulted Bowie to global stardom.

In the late 60s and early 70s, The Toby Jug pub in Tolworth, next to the A3, was a popular suburban venue for upcoming musicians, like Bowie, including Led Zeppelin, Genesis, Rod Stewart and the Stranglers, plus many more! It was demolished in the early 2000s and the land left vacant for more than 20 years.

The event is the start of a year-long #ZiggyReturns celebration of Bowie’s story and creative legacy exploring four themes: fashion, design, sexuality and, of course, music – with a focus on the vital role grassroots venues play in cultivating bands of the future.

What’s On:

  • 12.45pm to 1.45pm - Let’s Dance: Silent Disco – London Waterloo Station
Our celebration kicks off with a silent disco on the concourse of London Waterloo Station.
Put on a pair of special headphones and lose yourself for an hour in Bowie’s hits and transform one of London’s most famous railways stations into a disco for up to 250 people. Please be aware a £20 refundable deposit will be required for your headset and can be paid via PayPal or cash on the day. We will refund this post-event into your PayPal account or as cash after the disco. If you have any queries about this, please contact helloziggy@thecommunitybrain.org.

  • 14.24 to 14.52 - All aboard!
Hey man! Come on, grab your ticket to 10th February 2022 – aka Tolworth Station – as the next leg of our celebration takes to the tracks. Let us whisk you from the capital to the place where it all began 50 years ago – the Toby Jug pub in Tolworth. During the 30 min journey we’ll have live pop-up performances by musicians, or you can join a talk by one of our expert guest speakers.

  • 1.30pm to 7.30pm - #ZiggyReturns Tolworth Station Forecourt Festival (KT5 9NX)
Join Bowie fans of all ages and our community for even more live music with performances at Tolworth Station - a stone’s throw from the site where the Toby Jug pub once stood. Performers include Bowie tribute band The Thin White Duke and a selection of local talented musicians, including Laurie Wright.  Bar and refreshments available on site. Our festival is open-air, so wrap up warm!
