Description
Choral masterpieces from the Baroque period. Handel composed Dixit Dominus, a setting of Psalm 110, while a young man building his career as a composer in Italy. Twenty years later, after a move to England, he composed a set of four anthems to be sung at the coronation of King George II in 1727. Zadok the Priest, the best-known of the four, has been sung at every coronation since — will the tradition be maintained this May?
J.S. Bach composed his setting of the Magnificat — the song of Mary after the annunciation by the angel Gabriel — in 1723, shortly after taking up the position of Thomaskantor, music director of the ancient and renowned choir school in Leipzig. This monumental setting in twelve movements is one of Bach's most popular works
