About this walk
The Carneddau are a range of mountains at the north extreme of Snowdonia, containing seven of the Welsh 3000 summits. They also contain the largest area of contiguous high ground in snowdonia, with the main plateau standing at over 2950ft (900m).
This walk aims to take in all of the main summits of Pen Yr Ole Wen, Carnedd Dafydd, Carnedd Llewellyn, Yr Elen and Foel Grach, getting you back to the main A5 before dark and in time for a well-earned tea and cake at a local cafe.
How fit will I need to be?
This is a long day with an initial steep ascent, so a good level of mountain fitness is required.
What will the ground be like?
Once we have ascended the steep ground onto the main plateau, the walk is relatively level and solid. Be sure to pack walking boots with good ankle support. See our kit list for details.
What will we see?
If the weather permits, the Carneddau afford views across all of Snowdonia: Snowdon itself, the Glyders, Tryfan and the Ogwen Valley. Views over Anglesey also appear, with (occasional) views of Ireland or even the Isle of Man on very clear days.
Where will we start from?
We will meet at the Siabod Cafe, in Capel Curig, where your experience, fitness, and the terrain and the day's weather conditions will be discussed. We will then take the short drive to the start from the long layby on the A5 near to Glan Dena, just west of Capel Curig. The map location shown below is incorrect; instead, view this Bing Map Location of Glan Dena.
