In 1954, Reginald Brill, Head of Kingston College of Art, had the idea of commissioning artworks from the lecturing staff to capture local buildings and sites at risk of redevelopment. The primary aims of the Brill Collection as proposed by Reginald Brill in 1954 was: '... to put the Borough in the position of being, in a modest way, a patron of the arts while at the same time securing records for the future which will appreciate in interest and possibly in value as the years go by.' In 1997, after a lull of more than two decades (from 1971), the Friends took over the running of the competition and each year continue to commission three paintings a year from students at Kingston School of Art to record sites subject to change or transformation within the borough.
The Brill Collection, now totalling over 120 artworks and growing every year, showcases the work of many eminent alumni of KSA and constitutes a valuable and unique visual history of the changing landscape of Kingston.
