Description
This Christmas, Borough Market is inviting members of the public to spread the love by contributing festive messages and well wishes to a 400-metre-long paper chain – the longest ever created in the UK and set to be at least 100 meters longer than the height of The Shard (306m).
Set to be unveiled as part of the historic market’s official Christmas light switch-on at 6.30pm on Wednesday 30th November, the chain will form the backdrop for Borough’s month-long festive celebrations which include a series of specialist foodie events, demonstrations, carol services and performances.
Those interested in taking part can head to the Market Hall on Monday 28th Novemberbetween 12pm and 3pm to handwrite their message on one of 500 pieces of responsibly sourced multi-coloured card. Alternatively, those from around the world can share messages on social media by tagging @BoroughMarket and using the hashtag #BoroughXmasWishes.
Contributors are being encouraged to make a donation to Borough Market’s chosen Christmas charity, Plan Zheroes, which aims to tackle food waste. Traders at Borough have donated surplus food at the end of Saturday's trading day which has created over 50,000 meals for vulnerable people so far.
A professional team of artists will add the personalised chain ‘links’ to the breathtaking installation, which will include over 300 drops from a 100sqft ceiling of baubles, wreaths and lights ahead of official switch-on on Wednesday 30th November.
The last link of the record-breaking paperchain will be joined by Laura Hopper, CEO of Plan Zheroes, before she hits the switch on the rest of the decorations, bathing the 1,000 year-old market in light.
To add to the festivities, The Borough Market choir will be performing on the evening whilst visitors will be offered delicious mulled wine and warm home-made mince pies to get everyone in the Christmas spirit.
The event is free to attend and Market traders will be creating special Christmas produce on the day including hot, mulled English cider, Christmas gingerbread and nutmeg jam.
