Description
geo-fleur are pleased to announce a new and exciting workshop at SMUG, to celebrate the launch of their new product range, BONSAI.
What is a bonsai?
The Chinese first began translating naturally dwarfed trees from mountain sides and cliff-tops into ornamental containers, and it was they who first became to appreciate the weird, twisted beauty of these trees in their own homes and gardens. The Japanese, however, have since been responsible for perfecting the art of cultivating bonsai trees.
The word bonsai simple means ‘a plant in a tray’.
Authentic records of bonsai trees date from the early 14th century, and is quite possible that their culture originated over a thousand years ago. Recently the interest in bonsai culture has spread to the west, and today bonsai clubs can be found in most countries.
Bonsai trees need training throughout their life. This has two main purposes: first to maintain the small size of a naturally large tree, and , second to give it an appearance of age and maturity. Pruning and wiring are the two principal methods used, and pruning is by far the most important. It is carried out throughout the life of a tree, whereas wiring is only used to change the shape of the tree fairly radically or quickly = generally when it is young.
At this workshop, you will be able to pick between the following bonsai tree to take home with you:
- Japanese Holly
- Dawn Redwood
- Podocarpus
Then you will be provided with one of geo-fleur's exclusive handmade bonsai pots, and the japanese tools, vitamins, fertilisers, akadama clay and soil to pot your bonsai, guidance of how to prune the bonsai into one of the many traditional different shapes, and then teach you about how to care for your bonsai to keep it growing for many many years.
This workshop at SMUG will be held upstairs, with a maximum of 6 people. Downstairs at SMUG there is a lovely cafe where you can grab a refreshments before/after the workshop.
