Description
In Roman times, Southwark was just an island in the Thames, surrounded by wild west, hillbilly-style settlements. But the area to the north of the river was ruled by the Catuvellauni, a powerful and warlike tribe that was in constant conflict with their neighbours.
The first capital for the Catuvellauni tribe was at Devil’s Dyke, Wheathampstead, but this was moved to St Albans in 20BC. Cassivellaunus had been very successful in battles and this led to him being recognised as the tribal leader for the area. He was also the natural choice to defend our island from the Romans. However, despite successfully harassing the Romans, Cassivellaunus was eventually betrayed by one of the tribes he had previously defeated and was forced into a treaty.
So, for this year’s Bluebell Ride, we will be exploring the territory of Catuvellauni and we will visit the Devil's Dyke, Wheathampstead, where it is reputed that Cassivellaunus was defeated by the Romans when they first invaded. We will also visit an ancient wood called Langley Wood, which now lies in the newly-planted Heartwood Forest, near St Albans. There is a spectacular display of bluebells in this wood, when they bloom before the woodland canopy above them blocks out the sunlight.
We meet at 9.30am at the Southwark Needle and we start by making our way to Regent’s Park, which is very popular with road cyclists who like doing morning loops around the Outer Circle.
The 42 mile route can be downloaded from here: https://ridewithgps.com/routes...
We will stop off at South Mimms Services for a refreshment break.
The ride will finish at St Albans City Station (Thameslink), where there is a regular train service back to London.
Ride Leader: Nigel Bee (tel 07415 315 690).
