Description
Blow Up is back in Soho for a new Friday residency at the legendary St Moritz Club! The excellent SLUG will be performing live at the opening night on Friday 9th January
The basement club is one of the last 'original' venues in the West End, virtually unchanged since the 60s. Blow Up will toasting in 2015 at the venue as well as kicking off the Friday night residency here a couple of weeks later in January through to February. We will also be announcing new dates for Blow Up in Peckham for 2015 too – so stay tuned.
Expect to hear classic tracks from both Blow Up's past and present: from Brit Pop era favourites (the scene which the club helped kick-start way back in 1993 in Camden Town) to the current new Pop & indie stylists putting the art back into pop colliding with 60's Soul, Beat, Garage, Funk, Ska, Swinging Soundtracks, Hammond Heavy Jazz, Easy Listening & Ye-Ye! Brit Pop, Glam & Post Punk / New Wave will all be present and correct.
SLUG
If you're a BBC 6 Music listener you'll be no stanger to SLUG - the debut single 'Cockeyed Rabbit Wrapped in Plastic' made it onto the Playlist this October and Marc Riley (his 'favourite band of the moment') recently invited the band in for a session. (Listen back here)
SLUG is Ian Black, a former member of the Field Music live band and a merrily disruptive influence on the North East music scene for more than a decade. For SLUG Ian sought the help of Peter and David Brewis of Field Music to help record the album at their Wearside studio with the brothers adding occasional drums, synths and percussion to Ian's elaborate home-brewed constructions.
With SLUG, Ian appears to have consumed and spat out proggy Italian horror film soundtracks, Erik Satie, Zeppelin-esque knotty riffing, snippets of synth-heavy disco, post-punk's more dub-centric excursions and even a smattering of Hall & Oates' new wave blue-eyed soul. The vocals vary from high and sweet four-part harmonies to sinister whispers to a spiteful rasp which wouldn't seem out of place on a particularly grumpy Roger Waters demo.
The SLUG band will feature Ian along with Peter and David and fellow Field Music alumnus Andrew Lowther and Rhys Patterson.
