Described as Spike Lee's vibrant return to form, this loosely based-on-real-life film features John David Washington in a wonderfully wry and nuanced central performance as Ron Stallworth, an afro-sporting idealist in a formerly all-white Colorado Springs police force. Stallworth answers a newspaper ad for the KKK, posing on the telephone as a budding white supremacist, aided by his Jewish colleague Flip Zimmerman (a brooding Adam Driver) with eerie and disturbing results. Nominated for 6 Academy Awards, winning Best Adapted Screenplay, the film was also nominated for 4 Golden Globes and won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival in 2018.
