Course Description

How do illustrators establish themselves, and what is life as an illustrator like? Who works freelance and who has a job? We’ll cover these questions and also briefs, clients, deadlines, fees, usage, portfolios, illustration agencies, invoicing and more.

Did you have this class before at CSM?

If you’re a past student in my Central Saint Martins short course Enhanced Illustration or Illustration Workshop, this is the same professional practice material and discussion you had in that course.Of course you’re welcome to revisit that discussion in this Studio Class, and there may be new aspects to ‘life as and illustrator,’ as this is a constantly evolving subject.

Structure

The first half of the class we’ll discuss ‘Life as an Illustrator, including freelance vs. full time work, presenting yourself as an illustrator, getting work, agencies, portfolios, briefs, relating with your client and some nuts and bolts of being an freelancer.

For the second half, you may want to have a review of some of your work or portfolio, get help with an aspect of your professional development, or ask questions about professional practice. Generally, professional practice should be the focus of the day, though a particular question might not relate to our topic. But the class can’t go off on long tangents regarding off-topic subjects.

What to Bring

For the first half, no need to bring anything, though you may want to take some notes. For the second half, bring anything you’ve seen or worked on yourself that you’d like to discuss.Your phone, tablet or laptop could be useful for accessing websites dealing with our topic.

Committing to the class

With the small number of students, it won't be possible to accommodate enrolees who want to change to a different date. If you withdraw from a class up till 10 days before it runs, you'll get a refund of 50% of the class's cost. After that there won’t be a refund.

Flexible activities within our core topic

An advantage of a really small class is that people can bring up subjects related to the class topic that they have questions about or are interested in. Or we can modify an activity based on individual interests.

Class duration/cancellation

If there are only 2 students in the class, it will probably end a half-hour early. If only one student is enrolled, the class may be cancelled.

If any questions please let me know.

Best, Bill
