Bill Wright's Studio Classes: Constructed Perspective

Understanding some simple basics of perspective as you lay out a view on paper is easier than you might think and can be used effectively in drawing both real and imagined views. You’ll also be made familiar with simple drafting tools that can be helpful in constructing perspective and in many other drawing situations.

Great that you're up for the Constructed Perspective class! Below is info about it.

Course Description - Constructed Perspective

Understanding some simple basics of perspective as you lay out a view on paper is easier than you might think and can be used effectively in drawing both real and imagined views. You’ll also be made familiar with simple drafting tools that can be helpful in constructing perspective and in many other drawing situations.

We'll go over:

  • starting with 'nothing' and creating imagined places and objects
  • beginning with specific intentions, dimensions or plans
  • beginning with a rough freehand sketch with poor perspective and 'correcting' it to be more realistic.

Eye level, horizon and 1, 2, 3-point and multi-point perspective will be covered.

The emphasis will NOT be on lots of complicated technical rules and perfect perspective. Rather we'll focus on using common-sense, simple, time-saving methods and 'tricks of the trade' that people who draw lots of perspectives relatively quickly use.

Structure

The first half will be focused on learning materials regarding constructed perspective. In parts you’ll work in a follow-along-with-what-the-tutor’s-doing system. The second half is devoted to individual endeavours, reviews etc. determined by each student.Or if the group, more tutor-demos of perspectives

For the second half, you may want a review of some of your work or portfolio, help with a project your working on, or answers to questions you've encountered attempting perspective (or other subjects as well). Some students working in landscape or interior design bring photos that they want to know how to show their design on in perspective.

If you don't have something to work on, I'll have perspective projects or exercises you can choose from. If students want one, another follow-along-with-what-the-tutor’s-doing project could be included.

Or, you may simply watch, absorb and/or take notes as a particular perspective is created.

Flexible activities within our core topic

An advantage of a small class is that people can bring up subjects (hopefully related to the class topic!) that they have questions about or are interested in. Or we can modify an activity based on individual interests.

What to Bring

For the first half, no need to bring anything, though you may want to take some notes. I will have T-squares and triangles, but if you want to try out some equipment of your own, please bring that. For the second half, bring subject matter and any drawing materials you want to work with, though I'll have drafting and art materials available too.

Committing to the class

With the small number of students and the brief time between now and when the class runs, it won't be possible to accommodate enrolees who want to change to a different date. If you withdraw from a class up till 10 days before it runs, you'll get a refund of 50% of the class's cost. After that there won’t be a refund.

The word ‘Constructed’

A point of clarification. The term Constructed Perspective is one I invented. The correct term for what we’ll be working on is mechanical perspective. But novices can get confused by this, thinking that machines are involved. In fact, ‘mechanical’ actually connotes working with drafting equipment, just as when - often - drafting itself is referred to a s ‘mechanical drawing.’

Class duration

If there are only 2 students in the class, it will probably end a half-hour early. If only one student is enrolled, the class will probably be cancelled and your money refunded.

If any questions please let me know.

Best,

Bill
