    Description

Join us at Kingston Museum on Saturday 7th June, 14:00-16:00 for Betty Joel: Glamour and Innovation, Furniture and Interior Design in 1920s and 30's Britain on what would have been Betty Joel's 131st birthday!

Once described as 'one of the most important figures of the British school of decoration', Betty Joel ran her eponymous business from large showrooms in Knightsbridge, London with stylish works in Kingston employing up to 80 men and yet, 85 years later, she is largely forgotten...why? This talk, on the 131st anniversary of her birth, tells the story of her unlikely beginnings in China through to exploring her work from original archive photos of schemes, both private and public and explains why she walked away from the business in 1938, never to work again.

Clive Stewart-Lockhart is Betty Joel’s great-nephew and knew her well in the closing years of her life. He is now working as an independent art adviser, having spent time at Sotheby’s and with the two leading regional auction houses, Dreweatts and Woolley and Wallis. Clive was a specialist on the BBC Antiques Roadshow for twenty-five years and has been a lecturer with the Arts Society for the last ten years. Clive has recently published a biography of Betty Joel which, he hopes, will place Betty back in the forefront of designers and makers in the inter-war years.

This talk is part of Kingston Museum's current exhibition: Kingston Glamour: Art, Innovation and the Suburbs. The talk is free to attend, but booking is encouraged via Billetto to avoid any disappointment on the day.
