7 sessions once a month on from February to August

1. Screw Post Binding  Tues Feb 3 10am Duration 90 mins

This binding style gives the flexibility to change and update the prints and sequence. Mylyn will you talk you through the process to create a solid hard cover to house single pages that have been scored and punched to allow for easy opening.

2. Slipcase  Fri Mar 13 Duration 90 mins

A classic box that protects the book or album but leaves the spine exposed on the shelf. A great introduction to box making. You will be guided through the steps to make the box structure, measuring to house your book snugly, before covering in a protective book cloth.

3.  Lift Off Lid Box Tues April 28 10am Duration 2 Hours

This box structure similar to a classic shoe box style, is great for holding individual prints or books. Mylyn will talk through the process of measuring and constructing the base, then the lid and finishing by covering them both to give a decorative finish.

4. Clamshell Box  Tues May 19 10am Duration 2 Hours

A clamshell or Solander box is slightly more involved structure, an all in one box that can protect prints or books and sit nicely on a coffee table or a shelf. You will be guided through the processes to create the bottom tray, then a top tray and a case to bring everything together. Covered in book cloth to add strength to the structure.

5.  Drummed Layflat Binding  Fri June 19 10am Duration 2 Hours

This book structure mounts folded pages together, perfect for double page spreads on thicker paper that can score well. You will be shown how to score and mount the pages before making a classic hard cover binding with endpapers.

6. Books From Bins  Tues July 21 10am Duration 90 mins

When you start making books you always end up with lots of little offcut pieces, Mylyn will talk through some suggestions of using these up to make mini books, collage covers and using other recycled materials such as wallpapers and old fabrics.

7.Layouts Tues Aug 25 10am  Duration 2 Hours

We will consider the content of photo books, looking at page and book layouts, landscape, portrait and square formats. Thinking of multiple images on a page, borders, full bleed, using blank pages to help with breathing space and flow of narratives. Time for any questions about anything book related.

All about Mylyn

Mylyn has been a professional bookbinder and box maker for 20 years. She gained a BA in Graphic Design at KIAD before studying fine binding, her career saw her in various trade binderies across the UK but she spent most of her time working at Delta Design Studio specialising in photographers portfolios and presentation boxes creating projects for clients such as Magnum and Martin Parr. 

She is an active member within the bookbinding community and ran the Society of Bookbinders International Competition for many years. Mylyn now works from her small bindery in Wiltshire splitting her time between making and restoring beautiful books and boxes and teaching. She is Principal Tutor for the charity Bound by Veterans, she teaches to City & Guilds standards at a variety of venues as well as providing online tuition, she recently gave a demonstration at the Society of Bookbinders international conference in Bath. 

She is an experienced tutor and takes great pride and pleasure in creating and sharing this ancient craft, teaching both complete beginners and those more experienced wishing to improve their skills.

Cancellation Policy

It is inevitable, that occasionally an event will be postponed or cancelled for this or another reason beyond the RPS’s control. If an event is postponed we will transfer your booking to the rearranged event, with the option of a refund if the rescheduled date is not suitable for you. Occasionally an event may also be cancelled owing to a lack of bookings.

If an event is cancelled we will give you as much notice as we are able and any payment by you to the RPS in respect of the event is offered as a full refund. In the case of events cancelled because of a lack of interest, we will aim to give you as much notice as possible.
