This time last year we were all waking up to the news that David Bowie had died. We found comfort in his songs, but his film career is another important part of the incredible body of work that he left behind. This film is also a good reminder of what a brilliant, post-modern icon he is.
In Basquiat (Julian Schnabel, 1996), Bowie puts in an inscrutable performance as Andy Warhol, alongside an incredible cast that includes Dennis Hopper, Willem Dafoe, Benicio Del Toro, Tatum O’Neal, Gary Oldman, Parker Posey and Courtney Love. The wigs that David Bowie wore were Andy Warhol’s actual wigs, borrowed from the museum that houses them, however Jean-Michel Basquiat’s estate refused to allow any actual paintings to be used, so Schnabel painted reproductions. The film’s soundtrack is also fantastic!
