Balladeste - Preetha Narayanan & Tara Franks

‘Narayanan’s and Franks’s collaboration is pure magic…  There is nothing remotely quite like it’   BackSeat Mafia

Balladeste is a collaboration between cellist Tara Franks and violinist Preetha Narayanan. Writing all new music collaboratively, this unique string duo interweave contemporary minimalism, Indian classical and folk influences to create all original compositions that are vibrant and experimental yet melodic and filmic in quality. Having released 3 acclaimed albums of all original music to date, Balladeste have performed live and been interview on BBC Radio 3 In Tune, Radio 4 Woman’s hour, Soho Radio and NTS.

Their upcoming 4th album Imprints incapsulates the deep creative language they have built together over time - intuitive, exploratory and born out of improvisation, shaping a sound world that feels both intimate and expansive, where composition and collaboration become inseparable.

More about Fred Thomas and Lucine Musaelian

A collaboration between multi-instrumental composer, Fred Thomas and singer & viola de gamba player Lucine Musaelian. Their EP Havoon, pairs their own settings of Armenian poetry with chants from as early as the 11th century.

'Dramatic vocal monodies are enveloped by the nebulous drones summoned by a viola da gamba or a wheezing shruti box; whilst a prepared piano intones ritualistic bell-like patterns against abstract microtonal atmospheres, a haunting Medieval vielle ghosts improvised counter-melodies behind the voice ... blurring the lines between old and new, and softening the edges between past and present.’

In the last couple of years Balladeste have been collaborating with a number of new artists to open up their unique process of co-writing - working with cross-cultural string players nationally & internationally, working with vocal songwriting, electronics and collaborating on dance/theatre pieces,

The 'In Residence' Servants Jazz quarters series will share new work in progress over 2025/2026.

PAST GIGS INCLUDE COLLABS WITH:

Trina Basu and Arun Ramamurthy, Ana Silvera, Tullis Rennie.
