STORE Summer Schools are collaborative two-week courses in architecture, art and design. Each year, the programme brings students together to design and construct ambitious and experimental design and construction projects, culminating in large-scale installations and inspiring public events.
In its first year the Athens Summer School will sited in the district of Kypselis. The site, classroom and workshop space will be located at the Municipal Market Kypselis in Athens. At the beginning of the workshop the students will observe and investigate the social and cultural thresholds within the district. Kypseli is the most densely populated area of Athens; the students will critically respond with the production of an architectural intervention that will activate the use of public space.
Our summer schools aim to engage both participants and the wider public in exciting and innovative ways. Over the past seven years, our students have built a rooftop pleasure garden, built and choreographed an open air stage, and transformed a public square into a living room for a night.
Our summer schools are each led by experienced architects, artists and designers teaching at leading universities. The breadth of expertise they provide allows us to offer a programme which considers architecture in terms of urbanism, performance and craft while giving students the chance to test their ideas in the public realm.
As part of a diverse, energetic and creative group, students are guided by our tutors through hands-on, design processes driven by physical prototyping and testing. They gain experience in effective collaboration while also getting the chance to develop their confidence and leadership skills. Regular design critiques, photography and portfolio tutorials will provide valuable opportunities for critical reflection on their work, both as a team and as individuals.
Who can apply
This course is open to students between the ages of 15-25 with varying levels of experience. It will be of particular benefit to students interested in studying architecture, design or art at university level but also those currently enrolled in further education. Equally the course will provide an introduction to ambitious beginners with no design background.
STORE’s ethos of design through making ensures accessibility to those without extensive experience. Each and every student will be challenged imaginatively and creatively by set themes and by the scale of activities undertaken.
Accommodation is not included in the course fees. However, we would be very happy to recommend somewhere suitable to stay for all students who are not based in Athens.
For students wishing to enquire about recommended accommodation for the Athens Summer School, please email firstname.lastname@example.org for further details.
