Presenting a debut show at Hampstead Jazz Club, ASPYRIAN are looking forward to performing two sets of original compositions from their debut album (due to be released in Spring 2023) – They hope to see you there!
Formed by three long-standing friends and collaborators, Aspyrian are a London-based trio blending jazz with an array of folk music traditions from different corners of the world. Influenced also by an eclectic mix of soulful songwriters and alternative bands, the result is an ensemble sound that is captivating and truly unique.
As a collaborative ensemble, all members contribute ideas to the writing/rehearsal process - the compositions that take shape serve as a vehicle for expansive improvisations. Sometimes loud and brash, other times introspective and delicate, the group are in constant dialogue as the music evolves.
Robin Porter is an award-winning saxophonist whose performance highlights include The Royal Albert Hall Elgar Room and the Steinway Hall, as well as a ten-month residency at The Jazz Café. In 2013 together with his quartet they played for the BBC Proms Plus Late Sessions. In 2014 he toured the UK with this group, performing at prestigious venues on the jazz circuit.
Guitarist Jack Gillen leads his own trio with bassist Phil Donnelly and drummer Darren Beckett, playing his own compositions influenced by Jazz, Rock, Blues, and Classical music. In 2018, he self-funded, produced and released his debut EP with this group "The Long Way Down."
Matt Parkinson is a drummer, percussionist and composer. Alongside jazz, he has spent much time studying and performing the traditional folkloric music of Cuba, Brazil and West Africa and his playing and writing encompasses all these styles. Matt has performed at many prestigious venues throughout the UK including Wembley Stadium and Buckingham Palace. He is a member of ‘Howl Quartet’, a collaborative ensemble who self-released their first album in 2021.
"This trio brings together three of the most gifted young improvisers on the current scene." (Pete Churchill, Royal Academy of Music)
