Have you ever felt intimidated or frightened by the thought of arm balances and unsure of where to begin? Or perhaps you’ve attempted them and not having got to the final shape felt defeated, and put off. These are all too common feelings among yoga practitioners, but they don’t need to be. With the right technique, alignment and preparation you’ll find arm balances are easier than you think and fun to bring into your practice.

When we work with arm balances we’re not aiming to achieve a picture ‘perfect’ sense of a pose. Instead we want to try and let go of the ego, and approach these poses with a sense of playfulness, and instead put emphasis on the journey and commitment to our practice. When approached this way, arm balances are great for building confidence, focus and strength.

As with inversions, arm balances take lots of practice before they feel comfortable. So this workshop will help you understand the basic features and principles to help you on your way, so you can continue to develop your familiarity with these poses over time.

After a short vinyasa flow practice to prepare the body, we’ll learn how to strengthen/release the parts of the body key to helping us into arm balances: particularly the shoulders, wrists, hands and core. We’ll then play with various arm balances, deconstructing the poses so we can observe them in small parts and then put them together again in order to fly!

This workshop is best suited to students who have at least 6 months of regular yoga practice under their belt. The only prerequisite is that you need to be ok with plank pose, and weight bearing on the hands and forearms. Students will…

  1. Gain an understanding of the key anatomy involved in the parts of the body specific to arm balances
  2. Learn techniques to help prepare your body for balancing on your arms and hands
  3. Learn the building blocks of the poses, so you can practice safely and effectively
  4. Learn how to use your breath to help you maintain challenging postures

About me:

I've been practicing yoga for more than 10 years, during which time during which time it’s transformed my life, mind and body. I enjoy inspiring others in their yoga practice with a style of teaching that focuses on intelligent alignment, breath-work and mindful body movement.

I have a friendly and supportive approach and both my classes and workshops are suitable for a variety of levels, with modifications offered according to the needs of each student.

I completed my 200-hour teacher training qualification at Shakti Power Yoga in Hammersmith in 2014 and I'm a registered teacher with Yoga Alliance UK. Since completing that training I have continued my professional development, predominantly focusing on the study of anatomy and how to move the body safely through a yoga practice. I am well versed in how to modify a range of poses, and in how to help diagnose issues/challenges individual students may be facing with certain yoga postures.
