    Description

In the '60s gangs in London operated protection rackets, fought over territory and killed people.

We're now more civilised than that - we've learnt the importance of holding regular meetings to resolve our differences amicably.

The 9 mile route for this ride can be downloaded from here: https://ridewithgps.com/routes...

What this ride lacks in distance, it makes up for in things to see.

We will be meandering through the back streets of the East End and exploring some of the area's connections with murder, armed robbery, arson, protection rackets and assaults. We will meet at the Aldgate Pump (https://what3words.com/chops.s...), as this is the symbolic start point of the East End. The start time is 9.00am, which is slightly earlier than usual.

We will take a look at the memorial to the Sidney Street Siege, where Winston Churchill cut his teeth in dealing with armed insurrection. We will then take a look at The Grave Maurice, 269 Whitechapel Road, which was a pub in Whitechapel Road which was frequented by Ronnie Kray and other underworld gangsters including Frankie Fraser and George Cornell during the early 1960s.

We will then proceed to the Blind Beggar which is notorious for the fact that on 9 March 1966 Ronnie Kray shot and murdered George Cornell, who although he had been born and raised in the East End had associated himself with a rival South London gang, The Richardsons.

We will then cycle to the Novo Jewish Cemetery, the war memorial at Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park and the King Cole Memorial in Meath Gardens.

The ride will finish with a trip out to the QE Olympic Park, after which we will stop off at he View Tube for a refreshment break.

This ride is relatively flat ride and will be taken at a leisurely pace so it is suitable for riders of all abilities.

Please do not attend if you are displaying symptoms of Covid-19.
