The London Irish Centre have teamed up with Counterparts: Explorations In Irish Culture to present:
An Evening with Packie Bonner
“Timofte..... against Bonner.”
Ask almost any Irish person of a certain age where they were when those famous words were dramatically shouted across the airwaves by RTE's, George Hamilton, and it's most likely they will return with a wry smile and a warm feeling of national pride and nostalgia
Packie Bonner's epic penalty save against the Romanian midfielder, Daniel Timofte, at Stadio Luigi Ferraris, on June 25th 1990— which put Ireland through into the quarter finals of the World Cup in Italia 90— still goes down as one of the greatest achievements in Irish sporting history.
It would also turn Packie Bonner into a national treasure and Irish sporting legend.
Bonner's career, however, amounts to far more than this single sporting achievement.
Capped 80 times for Ireland, Bonner competed against the very best in the world, such as Ruud Gullit, Marco Van Basten, Gheorghe Hagi, Roberto Baggio and Gary Lineker. And as Celtic's most capped player, ever, his career highlights with the Scottish club are remarkable.
They include the winning of four Scottish League titles, three Scottish Cups and one Scottish League Cup.
As Jock Stein's last signing for Celtic, Bonner left his native Donegal for the city of Glasgow in 1978, and transformed from being a shy, homesick teenager into a confident, world-class talent, and first-choice goalkeeper, for both Ireland and Celtic.
More than just the telling of trophies, titles and triumphs, The Last Line, is the story of a Celtic superstar, and a true great of Irish International football.
In this exclusive, one off London public interview, Packie Bonner will share the highs and lows from this incredible colourful sporting journey with ghost writer of The Last Line, Gerry McDade.
There will also be a chance for the audience to put some questions to Packie Bonner. And the evening will conclude with an official book signing.
