In fine art photography it is the vision, interpretation and creative expression of the photographer that defines the image. What may be viewed by the passer-by or casual snapper as an ordinary or mundane seascape can be transformed in fine art photography. Pre-envisioning, challenging compositional orthodoxy, and exploratory post-processing techniques can deliver dramatic and compelling images.
Discovering and capturing Dorset’s Jurassic coast offers an in-depth insight into some of the most dramatic and exciting photographic locations along Dorset’s unique coastline. The workshop explores the potential of long-exposure techniques, as well as the potential of both colour and black and white fine art techniques to help you capture the unique features of this stunning geological rich coastline.
Workshop leader David Rosen has considerable experience of shooting the Dorset coast and specialises in long-exposure and fine art images in both black and white and colour. David makes extensive use of previsualisation techniques and encourages photographers to develop envisioning journals in order to elevate the quality of your fine art and long-exposure portfolios. David will share these approaches and techniques within the context of capturing the Jurassic Coast landscape
The course has been designed as a blended learning experience offering an overview of the key aspects of fine art long exposure and high and low key monochrome both at the in-camera and post-processing stages. Dorset shooting locations and shooting tips will then be discussed and shared.
Members then have the opportunity over the following six weeks to visit the locations at their convenience. We will then re-convene over two days to examine and discuss the images presented by each of the members. Individuals will be encouraged to experiment with various long exposure techniques and to create both high and low key fine art images from your respective trips. Workshop leader evaluation of the images, group discussion, technical advice and feedback will be covered.
OUTLINE AGENDA
Session 1: After a short introduction to pre-envisioning, the fundamentals of long exposure as it pertains to fine art photography will be explained. This will cover equipment, the creative use of different exposures, the influence of weather on long exposure images and post-processing enhancement of long exposure images.
Session 2: Capturing and processing high and low key images. In-camera variables such as exposure adjustment, dynamic range of the scene, role of negative space, being brave with tonality rule breaking. Role of luminosity masking.
Session 3: Dorset coastline location briefing. Suggested locations and access details. Shooting suggestions and tips. Weather, time of day and tidal advice.
MEMBERS 6 WEEK SHOOTING WINDOW: Members to forward to workshop leader by Wednesday of week 5 three high and three low key image examples from their shoot.
Sessions 4 & 5: Discussion and review of member image output. Each member will present his or her six images over the six days. A critique will be included and group discussion encouraged. The idea is to build on the experience from the shoot and encourage further experimentation and skill development.

Please keep an eye on your incoming emails prior to an event but if you do not receive any specific instructions, then you should meet at the time and place advertised on the website.
Cancellation by You
If you wish to cancel your booking PLEASE let the event leader / organiser know with as much notice as possible. If nothing else, this can avoid them delaying the start of the event while they wait for you.
If you have paid for an event, please note that this fee/ticket price is non-refundable unless we are able to sell your place to somebody else. You are welcome to sell your place yourself but, again, PLEASE notify the event leader / organiser in advance of any change.
Cancellation by us
Event leaders are asked to make plans for alternative activities or locations in the case of poor weather and, in most cases, events will proceed despite poor weather unless, in the view of the event leader, the weather will lead to unacceptable safety risks or very little chance of successful photography. It is inevitable, however, that occasionally an event will be cancelled for this or another reason beyond the RPS’s control.
Occasionally an event may also be cancelled owing to lack of bookings. So if you wish to attend an event, don’t leave it till the last minute to book as it may be too late.
If an event is cancelled we will give you as much notice as we are able and any payment by you to the RPS in respect of the event offered as a full refund. In the case of events cancelled because of lack of interest we will aim to give at least three weeks’ notice wherever possible.
Please note we are NOT able to refund any associated or consequential costs including but not limited to travel, accommodation, insurance premium or other costs incurred by you in order to attend the event.
Responsibility
You are responsible for your own health and safety and must appraise your own strength, fitness and mobility. The event leader is NOT responsible for your safety, welfare or attendant medical conditions. Strictly the event leader is there to introduce you to a location and/or to teach you particular skills.
Liability for any accident, injury, medical condition, loss or damage to property, inappropriate behavior, dress, equipment and third party liability is accepted by you when signing up for the event. You agree to indemnify and hold harmless the Royal Photographic Society from all claims of whatsoever nature.
Insurance
You are advised to consider having insurance to cover: event cancellation by you or by us, accident, medical, personal equipment and public liability.
In particular you should also consider, in the case of high cost events, the likelihood and consequences of you having to cancel or not attend at the last minute because of accident, medical or other unforeseeable circumstances.
