Making her UK debut at The Hampstead Jazz Club, Philadelphia-born vocalist Angie Wells is blessed with a rich., smoky voice and an instinctive feel for swing and story-telling.
Angie began her singing career in an intimate club in St. Germain des Pres in Paris, when she joined the trio playing that night for a few tunes. She went on to win the 'New Talent Competition' at the final 'Sweet’n'Hot Jazz Festiva'l in Los Angeles and has since recorded an acclaimed debut album, ‘Love And Mischief’. She is accompanied by pianist Alex Webb and his razor-sharp trio.
Angie Wells’ smoky, well-rounded voice gives listeners goosebumps on a ballad or blues, and then turn around to get them up on their feet when she swings. She "gives a show" in the true sense of the phrase with glamorous costume changes, humorous banter, and the desire to show her audience how much she appreciates them by giving everything she has during her performances.
‘Angie Wells is an impressive young singer who has had success in France. She has a beautiful voice, a quietly expressive style, and is particularly rewarding when singing a lowdown blues or making every note count on a slow ballad. She consistently puts a lot of feeling and understanding into the lyrics that she interprets.’ — Scott Yanow, LA Jazz Scene
‘Some vocal recording debuts are tentative and readily sound as such. Not so, for Philadelphia born singer Angie Wells. On her newly minted Love and Mischief, she spins out eleven (including one bonus track) mostly standards (with two originals) that are burn-the-barn smouldering with a centripetal swing.’ - All About Jazz
Alex Webb, a resident artist at Hampstead Jazz Club, has worked with many top UK and international vocalists and recently recorded the acclaimed jazz album 'British Standard Time' – a Jazz FM Album Of The Week – for Lateralize Records.
