Afif Safieh was born in Jerusalem to a Christian family. No longer allowed to return to Jerusalem while studying at the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium during the 1967 war, Safieh completed his education in Europe, and later becoming visiting scholar at Harvard. Safieh currently serves as Deputy Commissioner for International Relation, and is former ambassador to the Holy See, London, the USA, Russia.
