Description

A special evening of spoken word, demonstration and conversation on the healing intersections of art, nature and silence.

Join me for an evening of conversation and contemporary art on Saturday 14 June with:

Tracey Sheppard FGE

Rob Mackenzie and Syreeta Challinger

Tracey is a superb glass engraver who has carried out many high-profile commissions, including for churches and cathedrals. Tracey is a Past Master of the Art Workers' Guild, President and Fellow of the Guild of Glass Engravers, and Heritage Crafts Award Maker of the Year 2021. She has a deep knowledge of natural history and a love of plants which inspires her work as she closely observes and captures the fine detail and structure of botanical subjects. Work by Tracey will be on show in 'Listen to the Quiet'.

Rob is an artist working with line and form across themes of abstraction, architecture and nature. His work is deeply influenced by memory, everyday beauty, and visions of space, time and place. Through the connections of pen, line and material, Rob explores a profound 'presence of absence', where the emptiness is as significant as the marks themselves.

Rob’s practice is shaped by his lived experience of neurodiversity, following a catastrophic brain haemorrhage and stroke in 2014. Left paralysed on his right side, with Aphasia impacting his speech, impaired vision, and challenges with reading and writing, Rob’s creative process is a vital and powerful form of healing. Thankfully, he has always been left-handed — enabling him to continue his practice, with drawing remaining his medicine.

Syreeta is Rob’s partner in love and life, supporting him as a carer, as well as with access to art. A creative in her own right, her experiences and insight help Rob evolve in his practice.

During the event, Syreeta will share their moving story, speaking about the transformative role of creativity in healing, while Rob gives a live demonstration of his extraordinary drawing practice.

Drinks and substantial canapés will be available, made by Dominique Göltinger.

Proceeds from the event will go to Butterfly Conservation.

You will be able to view Listen to the Quiet, showing work by artists responding to conservationist Harrison Ford’s heartfelt call to protect the tapestry of life. Drawing on the vision of naturalist, biologist and entomologist E. O. Wilson, and a message co-written with Pulitzer Prize-winning author Anthony Doerr, the short film highlights the vital importance of biodiversity, urging us to care for the “quiet voices… the systems that sustain life on Earth.”

The showcased works will include sculpture, ceramics, original prints, engraved glass, letter carving, woodcuts and wood engravings, framed textiles, photography and drawings.
