    Dear friends

You are warmly welcome to a candlelit evening of music, poetry, storytelling and delicious Syrian food to raise funds for Hand in Hand for Syria – a UK based charity which takes medical and humanitarian aid into some of the hardest-to-reach areas of Syria. Here's the link to their page: http://www.handinhandforsyria.org.uk/.

This year we’re privileged to have the magnetic story teller Jumana Moon, music from the SOAS Guerrilla choir, Rebetiko urban blues, Ceilidh Beyond Borders, Ed Emery and also new poems by Richard Watkins and Amir Massoumian (see below for more details).

The event will be held in St Clement's, Eastcheap, St Clement's Lane, London EC4N 7AE.

Tickets are available to buy here: https://billetto.co.uk/a-candlelit-evening-for-syria - there will only be limited tickets at the door. Tickets are £12.50 and include food but not drinks.

If you still wish to support this wonderful charity and are not able to make it, you can donate: http://www.handinhandforsyria.org.uk/donate/.

We hope to see you all there!

    *A bit about the performers*

    Jumana Moon

Jumana is a storyteller with a great love of stories, tales, myths & legends of all kinds and has been collecting stories since childhood. They are, she says 'her favourite things'. She is particularly inspired by stories from her Islamic faith: stories from sacred text; folk tales and stories from the tradition of devotional poetry such as Rumi, Jami' & Nizami. Jumana is also a registered Integrative Child Psychotherapist, working therapeutically with the arts & play in primary schools in north London. You can visit her website here: http://www.jumanamoon.com/

    Amir Massoumian

Amir is from Iran and is a spoken word poet. He’s studied Psychology and has worked with trauma inflicted refugees in NHS therapy services. He has recently returned from volunteering with refugees in Lesbos, Greece.

    Richard Watkins

Richard is a poet from South London who brings a refreshing clarity, playfulness and depth to big ideas about what it means to be a human. A long standing performer on the London scene, his first collection, 'Most Things Move', was released in 2013 and he will be reading from the follow up, 'It’s Hard to Be a Human', which comes out this December.

    Ed Emery

Ed Emery is an ethnomusicologist, political activist, writer and translator. Research Associate at the Centre for Migration and Diaspora Studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies [SOAS, London]. He works particularly on Greek, Arabic and Kurdish music, with a particular focus on migrant musicians in Calais, Dunkirk and Kurdistan. For the past 15 years he has

organised the annual Hydra Rebetiko Gathering devoted to Greek rebetiko urban blues music, as well as Rebetiko activities in London. He brings us songs, music and a tale or two.Contact: ed.emery@soas.ac.uk

    The SOAS Guerrilla Choir

The SOAS Guerrilla Choir loves to sing and they’re wild about song! They meet every week to sing whatever songs they feel like singing - all kinds of songs, some militant, some not. They sing at demonstrations, at protests, on picket lines, and wherever good song is needed - to lift the spirits, to gladden the heart, and to carry forward the struggle against oppression and exploitation. They

welcome new singers and there is no audition. And you don't need to be able to read music.Contact: guerrillachoir@soas.ac.uk

    The SOAS Ceilidh Band

Based at the School of Oriental and African Studies, the band is unusual in being open to the music of the world (many members are ethnomusicologists engaged in research). As well as doing traditional dance music of the British Isles and Ireland, they also engage with Greek, Turkish, Kurdish and Italian dance music. The band tours extensively (Paris, Berlin, Istanbul, Venice...). They have also played in the refugee camps of Calais and Dunkerque in Northern France. In 2017 they will travel to Kurdistan and Iran. Ceilidh beyond borders... Contact: ceilidh@soas.ac.uk

    Rebetiko Music

Nicola Cotsoglou, Utkan Kocak and George Stamatis – three London-based musicians – will play songs from the Greek “urban blues” repertoire known as Rebetiko.
